Central Virginia is blessed with a number of exciting contemporary styles of church and worship experiences. Bethel Baptist Church desires to provide a meaningful alternative for those desiring a more traditional style of church and worship.
Presently, we have an 11:00 Sunday morning worship service with Christ centered preaching, historical hymns of the faith, relevant family worship, and theology rooted in the biblical traditions of the church. Nursery and preschool are provided during the worship service. The theme for Birth to 12 months is Jesus Is The Good Shepherd where children can experience the love of God. The theme for Ages 1 and 2 is Jesus is Creator where children learn that God created all things including them. The theme for Ages 3 - 6 is Jesus is Savior where children will begin to understand their need for salvation. Children and youth ages 7 and above will remain in the sanctuary for worship. We believe at age seven children are old enough to begin learning a proper reverence and respect for the person and things of God.
In addition to our current Sunday morning worship we have Bible Study and Prayer Meeting for adults at 7:00 on Wednesday evening. Nursery and preschool classes are also provided (with the same themes as Sunday morning) with the addition of classes for Ages 7-12 and Youth with the theme Jesus is Lord. At this age children can begin to learn what it means for Jesus to be both Savior and Lord.
We anticipate adding multiple Sunday morning worship services and daily ministries for men, women, children and youth in the near future.
A Brief History
Bethel Baptist Church was established in 1879 and moved to its present location in 1885. The fifteen members who organized the church first worshipped in Hunter's Chapel, a log-hewn one-room building on the J.W. Dowdy farm on the Evington Road about three miles south of our present location.
When this chapel ceased to be used as a school and only the stone chimney remained this was torn down and used as an under-pinning in the building of the new church. Samuel M. Mitchell, an elder in Academy Presbyterian Church at New London, gave one acre of land from his farm for the new church.
Bethel Baptist Church and its members provided a faithful witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ for 135 years until it's four remaining active members joined with a neighboring church in December of 2014. The church sat unoccupied for nearly two years until Rev. Jack Barrett, pastor of Redeemer Baptist Church, met with the trustees of Bethel to inquire about the use of the facility.
On September 1, 2016, Redeemer Baptist Church, Inc. officially changed its name to Bethel Baptist Church of Evington, Inc. and the trustees of Bethel Baptist Church deeded the church and property to Bethel Baptist Church of Evington, Inc.
It is with great anticipation and excitement that we look forward to preserving the history and legacy of Bethel Baptist Church. We look forward to being a positive and faithful witness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Evington and the surrounding communities.
The purpose of Bethel Baptist Church is to inspire its members to fall in love with the Lord Jesus Christ and thus fulfill His Vision and Mission.
The vision of Bethel Baptist Church is the Great Commandment of our Lord Jesus Christ given in Mark 12:30-31.
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." Mark 12:30-31 (NKJV)
The mission of Bethel Baptist Church is the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ given in Matthew 28:18-20.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV)
